Ending Our Nuclear Romance

Today the New York Times ran my Letter to the Editor, responding to a recent oped by Graham T. Allison Jr. and William H. Tobey, "Could There Be a Terrorist Fukushima?" Allison and Tobey call for stepped-up security at nuclear facilities.  I question the adequacy of these measures in taming a technology fraught with grave vulnerabilities in a highly unstable political world. I also point to the paradox of our President's efforts to highlight the vulnerability of nuclear materials at the recent Nuclear Security Summit, while his administration busies itself with promoting the export of U.S. nuclear technology. My conclusion is that we need to bring our precarious romance with the "peaceful atom" to an end.
