Paying Our Way

Ever wondered why our bridges are crumbling, our highways are decaying, and our transit systems are rotting?  Look at the federal gas tax, frozen at 18.3 cents per gallon since 1993. 

In a letter to the editor of the New York Times on March 3, I challenged the failure of Congress to address the gaping needs of America's ailing transportation infrastructure.  This letter was in response to a Feb. 27 article describing President Obama's proposal to fill the transportation gap by closing business and corporate tax loopholes - a politically expedient halfway measure, in my view.
